It is based on the little-known historical episode in which the powerful Welser banking family of Augsburg received the right from Emperor Charles V to govern and exploit the province of Venezuela in search of gold.

The story follows the Ansorg family, poor miners from the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) in Saxony. Having suffered poverty and the aftermath of the German Peasants‘ War, they join an expedition to the New World, hoping to find prosperity. Instead, they are drawn into a brutal struggle for survival in an unfamiliar and often hostile land.

As the settlers push deeper into the South American interior under the leadership of the German governor Georg Hohermuth von Speyer, they encounter tropical diseases, starvation, rival conquistadors, and fierce conflicts with indigenous peoples. The mythical search for El Dorado becomes an obsession that drives many of the expedition’s leaders to reckless decisions.

Rather than portraying the conquest as a tale of heroic adventurers, the novel presents it as a harsh and morally ambiguous enterprise shaped by greed, political ambition, religious conviction, and human endurance. Indigenous societies are depicted as complex cultures rather than mere obstacles, while the German and Spanish conquerors are shown as flawed individuals whose ideals often collapse under the realities of colonial violence.

The novel combines meticulously researched historical events with fictional characters, creating an authentic picture of one of the least-known chapters of the Age of Discovery. Themes such as colonialism, cultural conflict, loyalty, betrayal, faith, and the destructive pursuit of wealth run throughout the narrative.

Ultimately, The Conquistadors is both an adventure story and a critical examination of European expansion into the Americas, illustrating how ordinary people became caught up in one of history’s most transformative—and devastating—colonial enterprises.

/* */
jQuery(document).ready(function($){if($('.twoclick_social_bookmarks_post_66010')){$('.twoclick_social_bookmarks_post_66010').socialSharePrivacy({"services":{"facebook":{"status":"on","txt_info":"2 Klicks für mehr Datenschutz: Erst wenn Sie hier klicken, wird der Button aktiv und Sie können Ihre Empfehlung an Facebook senden.
